In collaboration with the United Synagogue of Hoboken’s Refugee Support Committee, Cantigas Women's Choir cosponsored two performances in support of our local refugee community.

These concerts brought together local choirs, student musicians, professional artists, and dancers — all raising their voices in solidarity and welcome.

International Tour: Greece

July 7-14, 2025

Athens, Naflio, Preveza, Greece

In July 2025, Cantigas toured Greece and competed at the 43rd Annual International Choral Festival of Preveza in Greece, taking home a bronze medal in our first choral competition.

The choir also performed concerts in Athens with the Kodály Conservatory and at the National Gallery annex in Nafplio.

Wayfarer

Wayfarer, was a prelude to Cantigas' tour to Greece for the 2025 Preveza's International Choir Competition. Inspired by Poor Wayfaring Stranger, our program explores emigration across centuries - the resilience, turmoil, and nostalgia of leaving home, and the metaphorical layers of love and loss in folk traditions. Featuring works like La Paloma, Donal Óg, Sea Wash, and traditional Greek pieces, the concert reflects on migration's emotional and cultural impact. Members of Cantigas will also share personal stories of emigration. We dedicate this performance to all who have journeyed into the unknown in search of a new home.

The Dance of Love

This fall’s concert title, The Dance of Love, is taken from the Rumi quote “Both light and shadow are the dance of love,’ which is the basis for our opening song, written for us by Syrian Composer Wassim Abraham in 2019. The concert explores joyful and buoyant dance imagery in Il Est Ne’s 7/8 dance meter, a South African game song called Nda Wana, Piazzola’s Vereno Porteno tango rhythms and foot stompers from Christmas and Hanukkah traditions, such as Deck the Halls and Drey Dredelekh.

A Concert to Benefit Our Local Refugee Communities

A fundraising concert for local refugee support featuring Wassim Ibrahim and Ethan Smith. Proceeds distributed to local refugee communities with whom we partner.

Wassim Ibrahim is a composer, ‘oud player and now professor of Ethnomusicology at Krakow Conservatory. His compositions have been performed throughout Europe, North Africa, the Middle East. He was named the Cultural Ambassador for the City of Krakow in 2019. He performs regularly– most recently in the Baltics. Wassim directs five world music ensembles.

Saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Ethan Smith is from Cape Town, South Africa. As a student of jazz and improvised music, Smith cites his keen interest in the traditional music of the world, particularly of Africa as well as countries of the far and middle east as a main influence to his sound and compositions. Smith has traveled extensively over the last few years having visited and performed in no less than seventeen countries. He now resides in Krakow.

Conductors Hannah Carr and Erasmia Voukelatos will be joined by special guest performers - Mustard Seed School Children's Choir, the Greek American Folklore Society, and oud player Mavrothi Kontanis - to bring you a beautiful assortment of songs in English, Greek, Ladino, Turkish, Arabic, and more.
